Port Discovery's anniversary

MARYLAND SCENE

December 19, 1999|By Sloane Brown

Lots of grown-ups put on their party clothes and came out to play at Port Discovery's "Dreams of the Season" gala. Outside the children's museum, giant snowflakes created by spotlights drifted on the walls. Inside, 650 guests were greeted with a winter wonderland, with scads of sparkly lights and a holiday hello from celebrity hosts, husband-and-wife team Maury Povich and Connie Chung.

After cocktails and dinner in the museum, partygoers got a quick trip back to the '70s at the Have a Nice Day Cafe, where dessert and dancing came complete with disco.

Making a night of the museum's first birthday: David and Suzi Cordish, gala co-chairs; Doug Becker, Port Discovery board chair; Jon Myers, Winnie Borden, Michael Bronfein, Gail Kaplan, Leonard Sachs, Hilary Schneider, board members; Kathy Southern, president and CEO of Port Discovery; George Stamos, vice chairman of Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown; Suzannah Bennett, vice president at Sylvan Learning; Elinor Bacon, deputy assistant secretary for HUD; Bob Brown, corporate catering manager for Hyatt Regency Baltimore; Mary Ann Gray, director of Mid Atlantic Venture Association; and Al Reid, president of Rapid Response Inc.

Port Discovery got a nice birthday present from the party -- more than $350,000 in proceeds.
