December 12, 1999

NORTH EAST -- A Maryland state trooper and three people were injured yesterday in an accident on Route 273 in Cecil County after the officer stopped to help a couple whose vehicle had struck a deer, authorities said.

According to police, Lewis and Barbara Yacabell of Rising Sun stopped east of Rock Church Road after their station wagon struck a deer at 5: 20 p.m. Trooper Philip Criddle, who was on duty, and his brother, James Criddle, who was riding along, stopped to help the couple.

As the four stood on the shoulder, a vehicle driven by Joseph Mackie, 67, of Elkton struck the rear of the station wagon, knocking the vehicle about 30 feet into the group, police said.

Trooper Criddle, 30, was taken to Union Hospital in Elkton, where he was treated for a broken wrist and leg lacerations.

Barbara Yacabell, 66, was flown by helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she was in serious but stable condition.

Lewis Yacabell, 71, and James Criddle, 27, who has applied to be a trooper, were treated at Union Hospital and released.
