LOS ANGELES -- It had the potential to be ugly from the start but even this was far worse than anything coach Chris Fuller and his Morgan State squad could have imagined.
No. 12-ranked UCLA dropped the bomb on the visiting Bears en route to a 100-39 victory in front of 6,531 fans at Pauley Pavilion last night.
"This one got away from us," Fuller said. "They beat the [heck] out of us."
Morgan State (0-4) beat itself too, by committing 28 turnovers and grabbing zero offensive rebounds in the first half.
UCLA (3-0) took advantage of Morgan State's sloppy play to build an 11-0 run to distance themselves from the Bears.
By halftime UCLA led 49-21 and things only got worse for Morgan State. The Bruins scored 29 unanswered points during a second-half stretch. The Bears trailed 69-34 with just over 11 minutes remaining and didn't score another bucket until Douglas Sims made one with 50 seconds left.
By then, UCLA led 98-36 and was in the midst of a furious run for 100 points.
UCLA reached the century mark on a pair of free throws by Billy Knight, who finished with a career-high 15 points.
Morgan State tried to contain the faster, stronger and more athletic Bruins by slowing the tempo.
The Bears hit 53.3 percent of their shots (8 of 15) in the first half but UCLA was sizzling.
The Bruins connected on 19 of 31 shots and also dialed in from long distance with five three-pointers.
Jimmy Fields scored 12 points and Ronny Van Hook added nine to lead Morgan State, which was making its first trip to the West Coast since the 1996-97 season.
UCLA extended its nonconference winning streak at Pauley Pavilion to 20 games.
The Bruins had five players score in double figures, including JaRon Rush and Jerome Moiso, who each added 14 points.
Morgan State had a brief scare when Fields, their leading scorer, was intentionally fouled by Moose Bailey and crashed into the basket support.
"Jimmy's a tough kid," Fuller said of his senior, who appeared dazed but stayed in the game. "He didn't complain about it."
Morgan State continues its uphill battle on Saturday against another Pac-10 team when it faces Arizona State.
"We have to raise money for our program," Fuller said. "This is how you do it and you can only hope you get better from it."
The 39 points by Morgan State was the least amount allowed by UCLA since Bradley scored 38 in 1973.
