Howard County police identified yesterday a woman who died Saturday night when the car in which she was riding lost control and crashed on Route 108 in Columbia.

Kimberly Elizabeth Knotts, 22, of the 6400 block of Sewells Orchard Drive in Columbia was pronounced dead at the scene of the 9: 35 p.m. accident in which two other people were seriously injured, police said.

According to traffic investigators, Leta M. Baumann, 22, was driving east on Route 108 in a white 1995 Acura Legend at high speed near Red Branch Road when her car swerved and crossed the center line into the westbound lane. She swerved back into the eastbound lane, onto the shoulder and hit several trees, police said.

Knotts was thrown from the car, and Baumann was trapped inside for about an hour.

Baumann, of the 9300 block of Gentle Folk in Columbia, was in critical condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said.

A second passenger in the car, Alexi Pascal Martinez, 24, also of the 9300 block of Gentle Folk, was in serious but stable condition yesterday at Shock Trauma, police said.

Police said they found alcohol in the car and are investigating the cause of the accident.
