"The Great American Road Trip: U.S. 1, Maine to Florida," by Peter Genovese (Rutgers Univ. Press, 202 pages, $29.95).

Genovese, whose "Jersey Diners" and "Roadside New Jersey" were regional gems, now has reached from the north tip of Maine to Key West, driven by love of kitsch as much as by wanderlust. His quirky, affectionate journal is enchantingly illustrated by his close-cropped, straightforward photographs. Even a casual reader will learn that U.S. 1 is one of the great anthropological living encyclopedias of history. Any brief inventory is injustice to the whole, but try eating at Irving Big Stop in Maine, Super Dooper Weenie Wagon in Connecticut, Hard Times Cafe in South Carolina and Mangrove Mama's on the southern tip of Florida. Delicious at every step and stop.
