Police give citations to 16 driving illegally during sting operation

November 23, 1999

Howard County police ran their second sting operation this year, targeting convicted drunken drivers who continue to get behind the wheel though their licenses have been revoked.

By 5 p.m. yesterday, police had caught 16 illegal drivers as they left appointments with their probation monitors, said police spokesman Sgt. John Superson.

About 165 people were sent notices to come to District Court for appointments between noon and 5: 45 p.m. yesterday. Police stopped those who got into their cars after their appointments and started to drive away.

Those caught signed citations that require them to appear in court, Superson said, and they were allowed to make phone calls to find another ride home.
