Sarbanes to open workshop on waterways initiative

The first in a series of regional workshops on the new Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Watertrails Initiative will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, on Contee Wharf Road in Edgewater.

The session will be opened by Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes, who created the initiative as federal legislation last year.

Under the direction of the National Park Service, the initiative is designed to link the natural, historic, cultural and recreational resources throughout the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries into a unified network.

The workshop, open to the public, is intended to bring together people and organizations to learn about the initiative, how the gateways network is forming, and opportunities for assistance with key projects.

Additional workshops are scheduled for Dec. 9 in St. Michaels, Dec. 10 in Perryville, Dec. 13 in Norfolk, Va., and Dec. 14 in White Stone, Va. Information: Carol Kelly in the Chesapeake Bay Program Office of the National Park Service, 410-267-9857.
