Ross Settles, vice president of marketing for The Baltimore Sun Co., was yesterday named vice president for new business and new product development for Times Mirror Interactive, a recently formed division of the newspaper's parent company.

Settles, 40, will direct the division's expansion into new online ventures. He will report to Hilary A. Schneider, Times Mirror Interactive's president and chief executive officer.

Based in Baltimore, Times Mirror Interactive was formed this month to manage Web-based products for Times Mirror Co., the Los Angeles-based media company. Its products include a flight information service and online versions of Times Mirror's print publications, such as The Sun, the Los Angeles Times, Newsday, Field & Stream magazine and others.

"Our charge right now is to say, `OK, what else might we be doing?' " said Settles, who takes over his new post Monday. "We're used to looking at things through a newspaper's glasses, but if we can look at them through a broader set of glasses, we might find a lot of opportunities."

Settles was appointed vice president of marketing for The Sun in 1997, and was a key participant in the development of the newspaper's "Reading by 9" childhood literacy project. Before joining The Sun, he was publisher at the Open Media Research Institute, a European news and information service specializing in Eastern Europe.
