19-year-old convicted of assault in death of immigrant, 40

November 19, 1999

A Prince George's County Circuit Court jury convicted 19-year-old Kelly Day Martin on Wednesday of three counts of second-degree assault in the beating death last year in Laurel of Salvadoran immigrant Gilberto Hernandez.

Martin was acquitted of first-degree felony murder.

Prosecutors said Martin kicked Hernandez, 40, after he had been knocked to the ground by Cochise I. Queen, 18. Queen was convicted last month of involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
