Walter undergoes heart surgery

November 16, 1999|By Pat O'Malley

Bernie Walter, the state's winningest public school baseball coach, had successful quadruple bypass surgery yesterday at Sinai Hospital.

"My dad came out of his surgery very nicely and is doing great," said Kelly Walter, daughter of the Arundel High coach and athletic director. "We want to thank everyone for their prayers and love, and let everybody know that he's as feisty as ever."

Walter, 57, who has won a Maryland-record eight state titles in 26 seasons (444-123, .783) at the Gambrills school, was admitted to St. Agnes Hospital on Thursday evening after suffering chest pains.

Walter had angioplasty in 1988 after a heart attack and another angioplasty in 1995. He hopes to be home in a couple of days and back to work by the end of the month.
