State schedules public hearings on Gambrills landfill

November 16, 1999

The Maryland Department of the Environment has scheduled a series of public hearings on permits involving a closed rubble landfill in Gambrills and an expansion proposed by its owner, Cunningham Excavating Inc.

In a hearing at Crofton Meadows Elementary School at 7 p.m. Thursday, the public will have a chance to comment on an application for renewal of a ground water discharge permit renewal that will provide for leachate monitoring of the filled rubble cell at the old landfill. The school is located at 2020 Tilghman Drive,

The five-year permit is not related to efforts by Cunningham to expand the landfill -- which will be the subject of two hearings in December.

Department officials said they have scheduled a public meeting Dec. 2 to discuss the application to expand the landfill, and another Dec. 16 for a hearing on the application. Both sessions will begin at 6: 30 p.m. at Crofton Meadows Elementary. Information: Gail Castleman, 410-631-3441.
