November 07, 1999

"America the Beautiful" will be the theme for this year's observance of Veterans Day in Carroll County.

The program includes flag posting, poetry readings by middle school pupils, a vocal solo and guest speaker, Ken Wayman, a retired Army captain. The Rev. Fred Eckhardt will offer a prayer. "This is a day set aside for all people across the United States to honor veterans, living and deceased, who served in all the wars," said Bob Edwards, a Navy veteran of the Korean War, who is organizing the event.

The program begins at 4 p.m. Thursday at Longwell Armory, Longwell Avenue, Westminster. After the ceremony, veterans will gather at the war memorial monument near City Hall for the playing of taps and a 21-gun salute. Participants will lay a wreath on the monument.

"We will have carnations available for anyone who wants to lay one on the monument," said Edwards.
