ALTHOUGH IT is pure guesswork, many can't resist predicting what the hot stocks in the future will be.

According to S&P Outlook, these will be the stocks to watch as we enter the next century: ADC Telecom Inc., America Online Corp., American Express Co., Amgen Inc., Carnival Corp., Cisco Systems Inc., Enron Corp., IBM Corp., MCI WorldCom Inc., Pfizer Inc., Time Warner Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

WALL STREET WATCH: "Looking ahead, you can expect returns from blue chips to average about 13 percent -- 12 percent coming from appreciation and one percent from dividends. Our projection would triple the Dow by 2010, up to over 30,000." (Kiplinger Washington Letter)

"We expect to see more bears than bulls at the market lows. We're getting close to that now, but we're still nervous here." (Investors Intelligence)

"We expect 1999 to end very badly for investors." (Hussman Econometrics)

"We are not out of the woods yet as far as downside risk, and there is certainly no sign of any infusions of liquidity into the stock market." (McClellan Report)
