State draw matches county rivals

Field hockey, volleyball, soccer schedules set

A number of county teams will face each other in opening-round playoff games thanks to the luck of the draw announced at the state Board of Education building last night in Baltimore.

FIELD HOCKEY: Long Reach (7-2-2) and River Hill (5-5-2), rivals since each technology magnet school opened in 1996, will meet for the third time this season in a Class 3A quarterfinal game at Long Reach on Thursday.

No. 14 Long Reach beat River Hill, 2-1, in a consolation game of the River Hill tournament the first week of September, then the teams tied, 1-1, Sept. 28.

The winner of the Long Reach-River Hill game will play top-seeded Wilde Lake, which has two byes, in the semifinals.

In the Class 2A South region, Howard (4-5-2) will play host to Centennial (7-4-1) in a first-round game Tuesday. The winner will play Hammond in the quarterfinals.

In other quarterfinal matchups, Mount Hebron (6-5-2) will play host to seventh-ranked Catonsville (14-1), and Atholton (0-11) will play at Owings Mills.

Glenelg (10-2) will play at Pikesville and Oakland Mills (2-8) will visit Carver A&T in Class 1A West region quarterfinals.

VOLLEYBALL: Centennial (9-2) will play host to Mount Hebron (9-2) in a first-round Class 2A South match Nov. 5. The Eagles beat the Vikings in four games Sept. 15. The winner gets Hammond (2-10) in the quarterfinals.

Atholton (7-5) plays host to Lackey and Howard (1-10) will play the winner of Central-Gwynn Park in quarterfinal play.

In Class 3A East, Wilde Lake (4-7) travels to Long Reach (8-4) in the quarterfinals. Long Reach beat Wilde Lake in three games Oct. 4. River Hill (9-2) plays host to Bladensburg in a first-round match.

Glenelg (4-7) plays host to Chesapeake-BC in a Class 1A North Region quarterfinal match. Oakland Mills (6-6) will play the winner of the first-round Forest Park-Sparrows Point match.

GIRLS SOCCER: In Class 3A, River Hill (11-1) travels to Wilde Lake (8-4) for a first-round game. The Hawks beat Wilde Lake, 3-1, Oct. 5. Long Reach (5-5-1) plays host to Northeast-AA in a quarterfinal matchup.

In Class 1A, Oakland Mills (2-8-2) hosts to Glenelg (5-6-1) in the quarterfinals. Glenelg beat Oakland Mills, 3-1, Oct. 4.

Hammond (7-5) plays at Howard (4-7) in a Class 2A South region quarterfinal match. Hammond beat Howard, 5-0, Oct. 12. Centennial (8-4) has two byes and plays the Hammond-Howard winner in the semifinals. Mount Hebron (9-2-1) plays at Atholton (2-8-1) in the quarterfinals. Mount Hebron edged Atholton, 1-0, Oct. 15.

BOYS SOCCER: No. 1-ranked Oakland Mills (11-1) drew the No. 2 seed, but must play its chief Class 1A South Region opponent, seventh-seeded Glenelg (3-5-4), in its opener. The Scorpions defeated the Gladiators earlier this season, 2-0.

In Class 3A, No. 2-ranked and ninth seed River Hill (10-1) will play a first-round game at No. 14-ranked and eighth seed Wilde Lake (5-4-1), a team the Hawks defeated earlier, 3-1. No. 13-ranked and fifth-seeded Centennial (6-4-2) will play its first game against fourth-seeded Surrattsville in the second round of Class 2A South.

In the same region, No. 6-ranked and sixth-seeded Mount Hebron (9-2) will open in the second round against No. 3-seeded Atholton. South Region top seed Howard will play the winner of Central/Hammond in the second round.
