3rd-graders' thoughts on various subjects

What's On Your Mind

October 15, 1999

Last time, we had open phones and let readers decide the topic. Dozens of third-graders from Ann Burdette's, Jen dePalma's and Adam Leader's classes at Hollifield Station Elementary School in Ellicott City wrote to The Sun in Howard County with their views. They range from opposition to Security Development Corp.'s proposal to build offices and possibly retail outlets on 2 acres across from their school, to suggestions of having the school day start earlier so they can eat lunch sooner (and have more time to study), to concerns about speeding and littering.

I believe that every school in Howard County should start earlier and end earlier. First, the kids get lunch earlier than just letting kids starve like 5th-graders. Also, the kids get more playtime and more homework time. Also, your supplies won't be used more than getting your pencils all shortened.

Chris Broholm

I believe that elementary schools should start at 8 and end at 2: 30. First is because then we would have more time to do our homework and to play. Second, we could have lunch earlier. Third, we could do soccer and other stuff.

Rachel McKee

I believe that the commercial development should not be built across from Hollifield Station. First, strangers could come into our school. Also, there would be more pollution and traffic around the school. Lastly, there needs to be more open space.

Danielle Imhoff

I believe that there should be only one mall across from Hollifield Station Elementary School. One reason is because I want to ride my bike to malls, but my parents will not let me ride a long way. Second, I want only one mall because I like my community having space and being the way it is.

Samantha Summers

I want to tell you Hollifield Station Elementary School does not need a mall next to it. Why? Because the beepers and noise will distract kids. We also do not need it because we will have too much traffic.

Lorilei Alley

I believe that our school should have earlier times to begin school and be dismissed. For one reason, we would have more time to do our homework and to play and watch TV. Then we could eat our dinner, then go to bed.

Brandon Osborne

I believe they shouldn't build the shopping center. One reason why they shouldn't build the shopping center is because there could be bad people with guns. A second reason why you shouldn't build the shopping center is because there are going to be too many people. A third reason why you shouldn't build the shopping center is that it takes up a lot of parking space.

Melissa Cranford

I believe that elementary school should start earlier. First, we would have more time to do homework. Second, there would be more time to play. Third, we would get to go home sooner.

Matthew Zohorsky

I disagree with the starting time of elementary school. First, third grade eats lunch too late. Second, if we start school and leave earlier, we kids can play before it gets dark. Third, kids will have more time to do homework.

Christian Sump

I believe the YKAV [Young Kids Against Violence] campaign, started by Leon Little, will help people stop the violence. First, I think Leon started this campaign because sometimes it is very dangerous on the streets. Second, I think Leon started this campaign because he wants people to be safe. Third, he started this because he did not want anybody to be hurt.

Brooks Cornish

I believe that elementary schools should start and leave earlier. First, the elementary students could have more time to do homework. Second, they could have more time to rest. Third, you also have more time to play.

Hai Yang (Sunny) Chen

I disagree that there should be commercial development across the street from Hollifield Station Elementary School. First, there will be too much noise for kids to work. Next, there will be too much pollution and littering, plus no empty space.

Maria Payne

I believe that there should be earlier starting times for elementary kids. First, it should be earlier because the kids would get to play more. Second of all, they should start earlier because the kids get their homework done earlier. Thirdly, the times for elementary kids should change because the kids would get to eat lunch earlier.

Jessica Giles

From my point of view, teenagers should go to school later than elementary students. One reason is, teenagers don't get their sleep. Second, if elementary students go to school earlier we get lunch earlier. Finally, if elementary students get out earlier, we get more time to do our homework.

Beth Carroll

I'm concerned that lots of people litter. Also, it is very ugly. Someone could trip on garbage. I really hope that you put this in the newspaper. Please don't litter. That's all I want to say about littering.
