Transit official leaves to take position in Maine

October 13, 1999

Peter R. Hefler, a key figure since 1997 in supervising the growth and operation of the Howard Area Transit Service (HATS), has left to become general manager of the transit system in Portland, Maine.

Hefler, 59, a Boston native, was first deputy and then transit administrator of the Corridor Transportation Corp., the firm that oversees nonprofit companies that operate the Howard bus system, as well as others in parts of Prince George's, Montgomery and Anne Arundel counties. He reported to the HATS board of directors.

"I'm departing back to my native area," he said, referring to the Greater Portland Transit District, which operates a bus system in southern Maine. "It's been an enjoyable two years," he said, adding that no one had been named to succeed him.
