McCandless takes over at Severna Park

October 09, 1999|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Jim McCandless has been named the new baseball coach at Severna Park High.

A Severna Park graduate and the director of the Green Hornets youth recreation program, McCandless takes over for Jim Pitt, the Dundalk High graduate who retired in May with a 390-217 record after 30 years in Anne Arundel County.

McCandless, 31, was a two-year varsity starter at shortstop under Pitt before graduating from Severna Park in 1986. McCandless walked on at William and Mary, earned a scholarship after his sophomore year and was a four-year starter there.

"It's a great honor to come back to my high school and coach there," said McCandless, who has not yet named a coaching staff. "It'll be a challenge."

McCandless coached 11 years with Severna Park Post 175, winning state and Mid-Atlantic regional titles in 1997.
