Art Farmer, 71, a be-bop master of the trumpet, the fluegelhorn and an instrument he invented, the flumpet, died of cardiac arrest Monday in New York. In the early 1990s, Mr. Farmer, who was considered a master of ballad playing, designed the flumpet, a cross between the fluegelhorn and the trumpet, which combined projection with warmth.
