Catoctin Colorfest

Travel to Thurmont at the foot of the picturesque Catoctin Mountains for Saturday's 36th annual Catoctin Colorfest. More than 360 juried artisans will display and sell their work at Thurmont Community Park, Guardian Hose Company Activities Grounds, and Thurmont Middle School. Food and entertainment also are part of the festivities. Train rides, sponsored by the Hagers- town Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, take visitors to Union Bridge in the morning and to PenMar and Highfield at the top of South Mountain in the afternoon.

Free shuttle bus service to the festival sites is provided from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Catoctin High School, Route 15, and NVR Manufacturing Company, Thurmont Shoe Company and Thurmont Elementary School, all located along Apples Church Road. Admission to the festival is free. Train rides depart from the railroad tracks near the Guardian Hose Company, north of Main Street. The first ride leaves at 10 a.m.; the afternoon ride departs at 2 p.m. Train tickets are $10, $5 children under 12. For the festival, call 301-271-4432.

Apple Butter Festival

For two days of nostalgic country fun, framed by colorful mountain scenery, attend the 26th annual Apple Butter Festival this weekend in historic Berkeley Springs, W.Va. Featured in the two-day event are countless jars of apple butter, apple-butter-making demonstrations, fresh-pressed cider, a hometown parade, country cooking, entertainment and turtle races. There will also be a juried art show and a beard and mustache contest.

Rain or shine, the festival kicks off Saturday with a parade at 9 a.m.; activities run to 5 p.m. The event continues from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Call 800-447-8797.
