A Reisterstown man was charged with first-degree murder yesterday in the death of his 7-week-old daughter, county police said.

Orlandus E. Giddens Sr., 28, of the first block of Sesame Court was arrested by police after the death of his daughter, Sinaii Cleopatra Giddens, was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner, according to charging documents.

Police were called to the Giddens residence on Sunday afternoon for an infant in cardiac arrest, according to charging documents. The baby was taken to Carroll County General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The baby had extensive bruises on her face and abdomen, police said. Her father first told police that the baby had fallen from a couch onto the floor. He later told police that he would "roughhouse" with the child, and during one such incident, he tripped on the family dog and fell with the baby into the dining room table.

Giddens did not tell anyone about the fall and did not seek medical attention for his daughter, police said.

An autopsy by the medical examiner found the baby's injuries were "both old and new with various stages of healing," the charging documents said. The death was ruled a homicide caused by child abuse and multiple blunt-force injuries, police said.

Giddens was denied bail and sent to the Baltimore County Detention Center.
