Red Sox update

Boston clinched a playoff berth on Wednesday, with its hopes of winning the AL East dashed by New York's victory last night. Considering the loss of slugger Mo Vaughn last off-season and an elbow injury that took away closer Tom Gordon for much of the season, the Red Sox will gladly settle for the wild card. It's the second straight year the Red Sox have made the playoffs. The Orioles have taken five of nine from Boston this year, though they lost two of three at Camden Yards in June. Boston won't see Jason Johnson in the first game because he broke a toe in his left foot, Instead, Linton will get another crack at the Red Sox. In his last start, he allowed three bases-empty homers in a 4-1 loss at Fenway Park. Martinez won the next night, 4-1. Saberhagen will be seeing the Orioles for the fourth time. He has lost twice despite allowing only two earned runs in his three starts. Orioles manager Ray Miller won't have to endure another start by Pedro Martinez, who is being rested for the AL Division Series, which begins next week.
