Yankees update

New York has a magic number of three for clinching its third AL East title in the past four years. The celebration could occur on Baltimore soil, with the usual throng of Yankees fans expected in attendance. After clinching a playoff berth, however, New York lost three in a row at home to Tampa Bay, including last night's 10-6 defeat. The Yankees have won seven of 10 games against the Orioles this season, though they've lost the last two. They swept a three-game series here in June, including a 9-8 win in the opener when Shane Spencer homered off closer Mike Timlin in the ninth. Hernandez defeated Ponson in the final game, 6-2. Ponson allowed three of the runs over seven innings. He didn't get the decision in a 6-5 loss on July 3, when Scott Brosius homered off Arthur Rhodes in the ninth during another first-half bullpen meltdown. Hernandez gave up five runs over 6 2/3 innings. Clemens has two no-decisions against the Orioles this season. He was torched for seven runs and 11 hits in three innings of an April 15 game won by the Orioles, 9-7. Mussina didn't get the decision, either, after allowing seven runs (one earned) and 10 hits in 6 1/3. Albert Belle hit two homers off Clemens, who also permitted three runs in 6 1/3 innings of a 7-3 Orioles win on July 4. Mussina picked up a win on July 5 by limiting New York to one run over 5 1/3 innings. -- (Yankees statistics, 6D)
