Keys to a Redskins victory

September 26, 1999|By Jamison Hensley

1 Shut down Jets running back Curtis Martin. The Redskins have to put New York in long second- and third-down situations and force quarterback Rick Mirer to beat them.

2 Rely more on the run early. With Jets nose tackle Jason Ferguson out, the Redskins should attack the middle of the 3-4 defense instead of their usual plan of establishing the pass first.

3 Tighten kickoff coverage. The Redskins, who faltered on special teams last week, need to stay in their lanes and avoid giving the Jets good field position.
