Athletics update

The A's arrive in Baltimore struggling to remain alive for the postseason and in the midst of a hellish two-day itinerary that had them fly from Oakland last night, play a twi-night doubleheader today at Camden Yards, then immediately leave for a make-or-break series in Arlington against the Rangers. Yesterday's loss to the Twins didn't help. The A's are 17-12 since Aug. 21, third-best in the league behind the Red Sox and the Orioles. The Orioles won the first game in the interrupted three-game series with a 13-6 decision Sept. 14. The A's lead the season series, 6-4, after leaving Orioles pitchers with a 6.28 ERA and 15 home runs in 86 innings. The A's continue to thrive with a powerful offense and a rotation bolstered by the July acquisition of Omar Olivares and Kevin Appier. John Jaha halted a string of 43 homerless at-bats Tuesday. Jaha (34), Matt Stairs (35) and Jason Giambi (32) give the A's their first 30-homer trio since Mark McGwire, Geronimo Berroa and Terry Steinbach (123 homers in 1996).
