Chesapeake cleans up at Centennial

Chesapeake-AA made a clean sweep of Howard County teams yesterday to earn the championship of the Centennial Field Hockey Tournament.

The Cougars defeated No. 15 Centennial, 1-0, in the first round, then defeated Glenelg in a penalty-stroke shootout, 3-0, in the title game.

Centennial coach Gail Purcell was unable to gain her 200th victory. The Eagles also fell to Hammond, 2-1, on goals by Courtney Vaughan in the consolation game. Caitlin Marshall scored for Centennial.

Glenelg coach Ginger Kincaid, whose team beat Hammond, 1-0, on Elizabeth Narron's goal in the opening round, said both teams played hard in the championship game.
