Fashion fights against breast cancer

Shop 'til you drop to help fight breast cancer. "Fashion Targets Breast Cancer," a project started by fashion designers nationwide, is hoping to raise more than a million dollars in just one shopping weekend to battle the disease. From Thursday, Sept. 23, to Sunday, Sept. 26, Saks Fifth Avenue will donate 2 percent of every sale to breast cancer charities. More than 100 celebrities are involved in this nationwide event, including Kate Moss, Kirk and Anne Douglas, Ralph Lauren, Candice Bergen and Heather Locklear.

A private shopping party will be held at the Saks in Chevy Chase this Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $25. Call 301-657-9000.

A dab of disco, a dash of Nantucket

Brighten up with Tommy Hilfiger Color, a new makeup line by the famed clothing designer. The cost can't be beat (nail polish is $5, lip and eye color $10, and blush $15), and the collection boasts a wild assortment of shades.

All lipstick is named for music (honky tonk to disco), nail polish for fashion (baby tee to strapless), lip gloss for dances (jitterbug to salsa), eye shadow for personality types (dainty to temperamental), eye pencils for places (Nantucket to Las Vegas), and blush for moods (enchanted to silly).

Rudi Gernreich, the thong man

He invented the thong. While that's enough to make any mother proud, Rudi Gernreich's accomplishments in fashion stretched well beyond the creation of the barely-there bikini bottom. The American designer made history in the 1960s and 1970s when he popularized such daring styles as the topless swimsuit, the knitted tube dress, designer jeans, and the no-bra look.

"The Rudi Gernreich Book" celebrates this designer's controversial career with more than 300 photographs of his designs. The book was compiled by Peggy Moffitt, Gernreich's favorite model and muse, and photographed by William Claxton. Sneak a peek for $29.99. -- G.L.

White rules

Forget all black; it is white's time to shine. Add a white jacket (the newest ones are fitted and zipped) or floor-length trench to update a black wardrobe instantly.

Patricia Darrow Smith, vice president of merchandising for the White House and Black Market, says clothes that can cross over from day to evening will do best this season, and black/white combos can easily make the transition.
