Instead of having to beg for a volunteer to fill a vacancy on the Sykesville Planning Commission, Mayor Jonathan S. Herman had three highly qualified applicants and a difficult choice.

He chose Edward J. Cinkole of Springfield Avenue, a landscaper whose work involves large-scale commercial projects.

The appointment, announced Monday, won near unanimous approval from the Town Council, with Councilman Charlie Mullins casting the only dissenting vote.

"Ed Cinkole has a really firm understanding of our Small Town Planning Guidelines," said Herman. "He has a background in landscaping and a firm understanding of streetscapes and usage of green space."

Herman remarked on the talent and experience of all three applicants and promised to find assignments for the other two.

"I was extra impressed with the people who applied for this job," Herman said. "In the past, we had to comb the streets to find people willing to do these jobs. I will see that each of these people gets some kind of work in town so we can utilize them in the best way we can."

The mayor also appointed Councilman Michael Burgoyne to a third, one-year term as chairman of the Capital Improvements Committee. The panel assigns priorities and funding to municipal projects. Councilwomen Jeannie Nichols and Debby Ellis volunteered to serve with Burgoyne.

"We would like citizens on this committee as well," said Burgoyne.
