Man charged with arson in fire at Sykesville hospital

September 14, 1999

A man living in a halfway house at Springfield Hospital Center was being held in lieu of $20,000 bail at the county jail on first-degree arson charges stemming from a fire Sunday at the Sykesville facility, court records show.

Gordon Hughes, 44, was arrested by state fire marshals soon after the 12: 30 p.m. blaze broke out in a second-floor closet at the two-story, brick-veneer cottage.

No one was injured and damage was estimated at $20,000, fire marshals said.

Firefighters from Sykesville, Winfield, Gamber and West Friendship in Howard County brought the blaze under control within 10 minutes, fire officials said.

A hospital staff member reported finding Hughes in a bedroom adjacent to the closet where the fire began, fire marshals said. No one else was in the building at the time.
