Kay Boyle

From an old and well-off American family, Boyle received little formal schooling, but spent much of her childhood moving around America .

Her first collection of short stories was published in 1930, and her first novel, "Plagued by the Nightingale," in 1931.

In 1963, Boyle, having worked in various schools and colleges, became a teacher of creative writing at San Francisco State College.

She retired in 1979 and lived in the San Francisco Bay area until her death in 1992.
