Cardinals: Kent Bottenfield threw his first wild pitch of the season in the fifth inning. Fourteen of Bottenfield's victories have come after a St. Louis loss. Third baseman Fernando Tatis didn't start for the sixth straight game due to a groin injury, but struck out in the fifth as a pinch hitter.

Cubs: Sammy Sosa has homered in nine straight series and 13 of the past 14.

Pirates: Brian Giles walked and singled in his first two at-bats, for a string of 10 times on base in 11 plate appearances, before lining out in the fourth. Pittsburgh has lost three of four and five of seven.
