SILVER SPRING -- Andrea Kraus, of Pikesville and Woodholme Country Club, maintained her perfect record of getting into the U.S. Mid-Amateur championship, posting her third straight medal-winning qualifying performance at Argyle Country Club yesterday.

Kraus, also women's medalist and Maryland amateur champion earlier in the season at Argyle, shot 40-3777 over a par 37-35 course. The hilly, 6,068-yard layout played longer and tougher than for the earlier event, and Kraus was the only one of 21 players who broke 80.

With five places in the championship available, Baltimorean Amy Pappas, a Sparrows Point Country Club member, qualified out of a three-for-two playoff after tying at 81.

Kraus, whose 69 over a shorter course for the amateur win was 4 under women's par and a course record, ground out her score yesterday without making a birdie. The Mid-Amateur, for women 35 and older, will be played in suburban Atlanta the first week in October. It will be Kraus' fifth appearance; she was exempt through previous play her first two years of eligibility.

Pappas, in her first year of tournament golf above the club level, played in the final group and rolled in a 10-foot par putt to cap a strong short-game round and get into the playoff. There, she came out of a green-side bunker to 25 feet and two-putted for a bogey, good enough to advance.

Of the other playoff participants, Pam Brown, from Landenberg, Pa., two-putted for par, and Shawn McCullough, Alexandria, Va., needed five to get on the green and two-putted to become first alternate.

Aside from Kraus, Brown and Pappas, the other qualifiers were Elizabeth Haines, Gladwyne, Pa., and Lorraine Houlahan, Alexandria, Va., with 80s.
