Ravens-Giants viewers must delay gratification

Game not televised live due to NFL sellout rule

The bad news, for local sports viewers, is that because Friday afternoon's Ravens-New York Giants exhibition game is not a sellout, it will not be seen live. But the good news, for local soap opera fans, is that "The Young and The Restless" won't be pre-empted after all.

Team officials announced yesterday that 2,000 tickets remained unsold for Friday's game, which starts at noon. Under NFL rules, any game that fails to sell out at least 72 hours before kickoff cannot be shown live in that market.

Channel 13, where the game will be shown, announced that the game would be shown on tape delay at 1: 30 p.m. As a result, the station will not only be able to air its successful noon and 5 p.m. newscasts, but also Friday's episode of "The Young and the Restless," the most popular show in daytime television.

During the regular season, a game that doesn't sell out in time cannot be shown at all in a market, by league rules. During preseason, each team can determine its a policy on non-sellouts, and the Ravens decided to show the game on tape delay, rather than not at all.

The Ravens buy the telecast time from Channel 13, then produce and sell the broadcast, thus retaining the revenue. The team chose not to buy the remaining tickets, a policy many stations adopt during the regular season when faced with the prospect of a blackout.

The game was originally scheduled for last week, but when the league pushed the regular-season openers back a week away from Labor Day weekend, the final exhibition game was left to the holiday weekend, which is traditionally a tough sell for local sports fans.
