25 years ago: In the midst of debate over the rights of nonsmokers and smokers sharing the same breathing space, the American Lung Association has published a new pamphlet on the subject entitled "Second-hand Smoke." It summarizes some of the recent research which bears out the harmful health effects of secondhand smoke. -- the Community Reporter, Aug. 23, 1974.

50 years ago: Teachers in Maryland for the school year 1947-48 received the third-highest average annual salary in the nation, said a study by the Council of State Governments. The Maryland average was $3,335. In New York and California, teachers received an average of $3,450 and $3,500, respectively. Although teacher salaries have increased sharply during the last 10 years, they have not kept pace with the trend in personal income of other groups, the report notes. -- Democratic Advocate, Aug. 26, 1949.
