Baltimoreans fond of funky fare

Baltimore foods get star treatment in the September/October issue of Saveur magazine. Check out recipes for Maryland Crab Soup, Smithfield Ham and Crab "Saute," Chesapeake Chicken and more in an article titled "Lady Baltimore Eats: Charm City's Food is Old-Time Funky Fun." Author James Oseland visits such eating locales as Bo Brooks, the Woman's Industrial Exchange, Nick's Inner Harbor Seafood at Cross Street Market and Pierpoint to get the flavor of our city. There are even comments from hometown boy John Waters. The film director weighs in on Baltimoreans' penchant for gobs of mayo.

Fancy-food shop to open at mall

Fancy food-buying will get a little easier in the Baltimore area next month. Harry and David -- long known for the luscious fruits, gourmet chocolates, gift baskets, smoked meats and baked goods available in its mail-order catalogs -- is opening a store Sept. 15 at Towson Town Center. Shoppers will have access to the company's numerous products -- including condiments, cheeses, pasta and salad -- at the new shop on the mall's third level near Hecht's.
