COLLEGE PARK -- Greg Manning and Lefty Driesell will be reunited in Atlanta later this week when Manning leaves his position as analyst for the Maryland basketball network to become the athletic director at Georgia State.

Manning, who would have been entering his 14th season this year working with play-by-play announcer Johnny Holliday, played four outstanding seasons for Driesell at Maryland from 1977-1981 and helped the Terps earn two NCAA tournament bids.

Driesell is set to begin his third year as head coach at Georgia State, where he won his 700th game last season.

Manning said: "It's exciting to be joining Lefty again. He has so much enthusiasm for the game, and he can still coach. I've been wanting to be an AD and this is a great opportunity at a Division I school in a major city. I know they want me to help with fund-raising."

In addition to his job as analyst, Manning has been the director of major gifts at Maryland and has gained an outstanding reputation for his ability to raise money.

"I'll still be a Maryland fan even though I'm in Atlanta," said Manning, the Terps' all-time single-season (90.8 percent) and career (85.8) leader in free-throw shooting.

Manning is also 11th in career scoring with 1,561 points and third in career field-goal shooting (58.3 percent) and eighth in field goals made (623).

Officials for Learfield Communications, the Missouri-based syndicator that holds the broadcast rights to Maryland events, could not be reached to comment yesterday.

Holliday, Manning's longtime radio partner, was on vacation.

While Learfield pays Manning for his commentary, Maryland officials have approval rights over the announcers and likely will determine Manning's successor.

Early speculation on the next Maryland commentator centers on former Terp guards Dutch Morley and Duane Simpkins and former center Len Elmore, who has done extensive television basketball commentary.
