Board of Education to hold fiscal 2001 budget meeting

The Carroll County Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday to review and approve the proposed fiscal 2001 state and local capital improvement budget requests.

The capital improvement budget reflects a six-year plan for school construction and renovation derived from the Facilities Master Plan for Carroll County Public Schools. It also includes other local capital improvement projects.

The board will meet in a closed session at 5: 30 p.m. to obtain legal advice. The public is welcome to the 7 p.m. meeting in Room 007 of the board offices, 125 N. Court St., Westminster.

Information: 410-751-3020.

Program on effects of heroin slated for Westminster High

A program entitled "Heroin Alert!" will be presented at 7 p.m. Sept. 1 at Westminster High School.

The slide presentation was put together by the New Castle, Del., police in 1998 to demonstrate the effects of heroin in their community, which saw more than 60 overdose deaths in a two-year period.

The program demonstrates, sometimes in graphic detail, the physical and mental health aspects of the potentially lethal drug.

Parents are urged to consider whether the program is appropriate for their teen-agers. Middle and elementary school pupils should not attend.

Westminster High is sponsoring the program and the New Castle police are paying all expenses.

The school is at 1225 Washington Road. Information: 410-751-3331.
