The Freestate Happy Wanderers Walking Club has arranged a Millennium Evening Walk on 9/9/99. Get it? Thursday, Sept. 9, at Kinder Farm Park in Millersville.

Participants in the 6.2-mile walk (you can choose a shorter version) start anytime between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., and should finish by 8 p.m. Signs will direct you to the starting point for the walk, which follows a path along the park's paved bike trails, the B&A Trail and sidewalks in the Brittingham community.

There's no fee, but everyone is asked to register at the start. The trail may be walked twice per start card on the same day. If you're walking for credit toward an IVV Achievement Award, there is a $2 registration fee.

This is a family event, and pets are welcome as long as they are on leashes. Drinking water will be available, and there will be restrooms in Kinder Farm Park and at the checkpoint.

CROP Walk

Another walk in the news is the annual Severna Park CROP Walk. A planning meeting for the October event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 2 at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Representatives from church and civic groups are invited to attend to receive information and recruiting materials.

The CROP Walk is supposed to raise awareness of local and worldwide hunger, and to raise money for relief through the Church World Service.

Participants are sponsored for the distance they walk, with 25 percent of the local donations going to the Severna Park Assistance Network.

This year's CROP Walk is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 3 at the B&A Trail Park.

Information: 410-757-0399. The Church World Service hot line is 1-800-456-1310.

Grandparents Day

Grandparents will be honored, and quite a few, no doubt, will be running, at the Annapolis Striders Dawson's 5-Mile Run beginning at 8 a.m. on Grandparents Day, Sept. 12, at Severna Park High School.

Part of the mostly flat course follows the B&A Trail, with some hills on the community roads portion. For Striders, this is the sixth leg of the 1999 Championship Series.

Water will be available, and Chesapeake Bagel Bakery of Severna Park will provide refreshments.

Register by mail before Sept. 4 or on race day at 6: 30 a.m. Pre-entry fees are $3 for members and $4 for nonmembers; on race day, $5.

Information: race director Dan Symancyk at 410-544-1516, or go to http: //annapolisstriders.org.

Bell ringers needed

The Salvation Army of Annapolis and Southern Anne Arundel County needs help.

Volunteers are needed to be bell ringers for the annual kettle campaign between Nov. 9 and Dec. 24.

Help is also needed to dress teddy bears, provide stocking stuffers, fill food baskets and sort toys for distribution.

Speakers are available for groups considering participation. Call Carolyn Burge at 410-263-4091.
