Twins update

Minnesota began yesterday in third place in the weak AL Central, winners of two straight and six of 10 but still miles from playoff contention. The Twins were 31-12 when scoring first, 19-53 when the opposition did so. They had won only once in 59 games when trailing after eight innings. Perkins has made 10 relief appearances in two stints with the Twins this season. Marty Cordova was 24-for-71 with 18 RBIs in his last 24 games before last night. Catcher Terry Steinbach is 10-for-28 lifetime against Erickson. Harold Baines is 10-for-20 with two homers and nine RBIs against Hawkins. The Twins' bullpen has some issues with Brady Anderson. He's 6-for-14 with four homers and seven RBIs against Bob Wells, and 6-for-11 with a homer against closer Mike Trombley. The Orioles took two of three from the Twins at Camden Yards earlier this season. Baines homered off Hawkins in a 7-1 win on April 30. Hawkins allowed five runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. Mussina tossed seven shutout innings in a 6-0 victory on May 2. The Twins prevailed the previous day, 7-2, but the three pitchers they faced -- Rocky Coppinger, Doug Linton and Gabe Molina -- no longer are with the Orioles. -- (Twins statistics, 6D)
