School year beginning early for new teachers

Program easing transition to classroom begins today

The first day of school will be a day of anxiety, stress and confusion not only for hundreds of new pupils, but also for Carroll County's 140 new teachers.

To ease the transition from college to classroom, Carroll County public schools are holding the 10th annual new-teacher training program this week.

Teachers will kick off the program this morning at North Carroll High School. The mandatory sessions give new teachers a chance to learn about curricula, school policies and procedures, fringe benefits and contract issues.

Barry Gelsinger, director of curriculum and staff development for Carroll schools, said the sessions will help new teachers "be well planned and prepared, so that when school opens on [Aug. 30], they are ready to devote attention to the children."

Gelsinger, who has planned the programs for three years, said that in addition to listening to speeches by Superintendent William H. Hyde, human resources personnel and guidance counselors, new teachers will have an opportunity to work with seasoned teachers. Veterans will give advice, answer questions and help new employees plan curricula.

Throughout most of the week, new teachers -- who are paid to attend the program -- will be separated into groups based on the grade level and subject they teach.

"Because we are seeing a significant shift of population, there's been a greater need for additional staff at the secondary level," Gelsinger said, adding that the majority of workshop employees are secondary school teachers.

He said he has received positive feedback from teachers about the program, which is why this year's program is not much different from last year's.

Gelsinger said the most noticeable difference is that elementary school teachers will spend more time planning curricula and talking with veteran teachers and less time learning about the school where they will be working.
