Stellar Brush heads a field of 12 in the $250,000 West Virginia Derby tomorrow at Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort in Chester, W. Va. Post time is 10: 35 p.m.

Trained by Richard W. Small at Pimlico, Stellar Brush is one of five Maryland horses entered in the 1 1/8-mile Derby, the richest horse race ever in West Virginia. Racing officials raised the purse with revenue from their slot machines.

At yesterday's post-position draw, Stellar Brush drew No. 5 and was named the 9-5 favorite. Three weeks ago, he won the Ohio Derby, defeating Ecton Park by a neck. Last weekend, Ecton Park captured the Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga.

Other Maryland horses entered in the Derby (their odds, trainers and base tracks):

Harry's Halo (5-1, Grover G. "Buddy" Delp, Laurel Park), Clever Gem (6-1, Mary Eppler, Pimlico), Bayonet (10-1, H. Graham Motion, Laurel Park), and Pettit's Quest (20-1, Linda Albert, Bowie).

Clever Gem also is entered in a stakes tomorrow at Delaware Park. Eppler said she would decide today which race to run in.

Bob Baffert trains American Spirit, the 3-1 second choice.

And Edgar Prado will fly in from Saratoga to ride Bayonet.

The field in post position order (with jockeys):

Pettit's Quest (Dana Whitney), Who Ezze (Jeff Lloyd), Moon Over Prospect (Ray Sibille), Harry's Halo (Mark Johnston), Stellar Brush (Mike McCarthy), American Halo (Jose Ferrer), American Spirit (Willie Martinez), Goal for Adam (Chad Murphy), Jim'smrtee (Luis J.
