Naval Academy Concert Band to close Linthicum Park summer music series

NEXT SUNDAY, a performance by the Naval Academy Concert Band and an "All-American Picnic" will bring the Concerts in the Park summer series to a close.

The picnic, sponsored by the Linthicum-Shipley Improvement Association, begins at 5 p.m. at Linthicum Park on Benton Avenue. Both are free.

Parking is available on the Linthicum Elementary School lot adjacent to the park.

Blankets or lawn chairs are needed for seating. If it rains, the concert and picnic will be canceled.

Today's concert is the Crabtowne Big Band playing music from the Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller and Count Basie era. It starts at 6 p.m.

Flea market and history

The Ann Arrundell County Historical Society will hold a flea market from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 18 at Benson-Hammond House.

Spaces are available for $10 and must be reserved not later than a week ahead.

Benson-Hammond House is on Aviation Boulevard at Andover Road.

Park playground

Seesaw, swings and sliding boards are back in use at the Linthicum Park playground.

The county Department of Parks and Recreation tore down the old wooden equipment and replaced it.

Last week, children could be seen enjoying the playground as parents watched from new benches around the perimeter.

Linthicum Park is on Benton Avenue by the water tower.

Snowball stand

The youth of St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church are staffing a snowball stand on the church's back parking lot.

More than 100 flavors are being sold, including a few low-calorie varieties.

Ice cream and marshmallows are available as extras. The snowballs come in four sizes ranging in price from 50 cents to $1.25.

The stand is open daily from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the youth ministry.

St. Philip Neri is at 6405 Orchard Road.

Recreation open house

North Linthicum Recreation Club is holding an open house from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Aug. 28.

A spaghetti dinner, ice cream social, a silent auction and a 50-50 raffle are planned.

DJ-Karaoke Express will entertain.

The cost is $7; and $5 for children ages 3 to 11. Children younger than 3 are admitted free.

Pool memberships are available at two-thirds off the seasonal cost.

The club is at 100 Governors Gate Lane in Overlook Park.
