Maryland tips off season dunking for Big Apple

Terps' schedule includes Preseason NIT, Ky. rematch

August 06, 1999|By Paul McMullen

A historic visit to Cole Field House by Kentucky, an eighth straight year in Baltimore and the prospect of a trip to Madison Square Garden are the nonconference highlights of the Maryland men's basketball schedule released yesterday.

The initial loss in last season's 28-6 campaign came at Kentucky's Rupp Arena, and the return game, Dec. 11, will mark the Wildcats' first at Cole since they lost the 1966 NCAA final to Texas-El Paso, then Texas Western. That game hastened the integration of college basketball, as an all-black starting five emerged as the first to win the title, beating an all-white Kentucky team.

The inaugural ACC/Big Ten Challenge will bring Maryland to the Baltimore Arena on Nov. 30 to face Iowa. The Terps are 6-1 in Baltimore under Gary Williams, who will start his second decade as coach at his alma mater.

Maryland will appear in two regular-season tournaments.

For the fifth straight year, it will headline the BB&T Classic at the MCI Center in Washington, where the Terps will face Illinois in the first round. The Terps will also make their initial appearance in the Preseason NIT, and if they can get through the first two rounds at Cole, Maryland would advance to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Terps have two nationally televised games, their ACC home opener Jan. 9 against Duke (CBS) and a Feb. 13 trip to Temple (ABC).
