LEE DOVE, Archbishop Spalding High School director of athletics, has won the 1999 National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association's State Award of Merit.

The award is presented annually to one NIAAA member in each state in recognition of service, leadership and outstanding contributions to interscholastic athletics.

He will receive the award in April at the NIAAA Convention in Ocean City.

During his 13 years at Spalding, Dove has added tennis, golf, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track to the sports program. The school has 35 teams in 21 sports.

Thrift stores

When you shop at one of Central County's nonprofit thrift shops, you do a good deed.

To improve service, the Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake's center in Millersville has been enlarged. Now, there is space for the "name brand merchandise at unbelievable prices" that Goodwill advertises.

The store, in the Northway Shopping Center, 674 Old Mill Road, has expanded its hours to 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The donation center next door is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

For information, call 410-987-9740.

Add to the growing list of bargain-filled destinations the new Salvation Army Thrift Store next to Ace Hardware in Park Plaza on Ritchie Highway, Severna Park.

The store opened this spring and stocks a variety of used goods, including books, antiques and collectibles.

It is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Store information: 410-421-5330; pickup: 410-525-0530.

Another good local thrift shop is Hospice of the Chesapeake's Chesapeake Treasures, in Park Plaza.

Opened in May 1997 in Patriot Plaza, the shop moved to Park Plaza in January 1998 and, after paying for rent and utilities, has contributed more than $93,000 to the support of hospice services.

Donations are accepted whenever the shop is open: from 10: 30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 10: 30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Information: 410-384-9260.

The American Cancer Society's Discovery Shop is in the First Mariner Bank Square shopping center on Ritchie Highway.

Prices are marked down every two weeks.

Donations are accepted whenever the shop is open, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and Friday and Saturday; Thursday hours are 10 a.m. to 5: 30 p.m.
