Pure Steve Earle

August 05, 1999|By J.D. Considine

Steve Earle has worn many hats over the years -- country singer, redneck rocker, socially conscious folkie, rootsy revivalist. But no matter what his stylistic bent, Earle's greatest strength has been as a singer and a songwriter. That's the side that should come through most strongly on his current tour, in which Earle will be presenting his work with just an acoustic guitar for accompaniment.

Folks down in the Washington area will get a truncated version of his show when he opens for Shawn Colvin in a week (Aug. 12 at the Wolf Trap Filene Center in Vienna, Va.). But Baltimoreans will get an unadulterated dose of Earle the night before, when he headlines at the Recher Theatre in Towson.

The show is Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Recher Theatre, 512 York Road, Towson. Tickets are $20. Call 410-481-6500 for tickets, 410-337-7178 for information.
