Jaime Geilenkirchen, from Hunt Valley Golf Club, set a competitive course record for the year-old Hayfields Country Club yesterday, posting a 4-under-par 68 to lead the first round of the 45th Annual Baltimore City Amateur Championship.

As was the case with many in 55-player the field, it was the first look at the course for the 20-year-old redshirt University of Houston sophomore. He finished with six birdies on putts up to 15 feet and two bogeys.

"Perhaps it was better I didn't know where there was trouble," he said.

Earlier, Larry Storck of the host club, winner of this title in 1997-98, shot 70 to equal the record for the 7,020-yard, par-72 course in Hunt Valley. Later, former Maryland State Amateur titlist Justin Klein, from Baltimore CC, duplicated the feat. Storck had no bogeys in his 35-35; Klein had four birdies and two bogeys in 34-36.

Frank Neff, of Sparrows Point CC, also dipped under par with 37-34--71. Rolling Road's Rick Sovero was at 36-36--72. The final round will be played today.
