Barenaked and Beautiful

Critic's choice: Pop music

August 01, 1999|By J.D. Considine

There's something downright old-fashioned about the Barenaked Ladies. There's nothing particularly trendy about this Canadian combo; they aren't teen heartthrobs, don't flirt with techno, never mix hip-hop with metal. But what they do have going for them are wit and a resilient sense of melody. Those qualities -- and their first-rate live show -- have been enough to carry the quintet to stardom.

That alone should be enough to make their concert on Friday a must-see, but wait -- there's more. Also on the bill at the Merriweather Post Pavilion is the Beautiful South.

Musically and aesthetically, the South's beautiful melodies and jabbing wit are a perfect complement to the Ladies, making this one of the season's more satisfying combinations.

Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Call 410-481-6500.
