Mariners update

Seattle defeated Kansas City yesterday, 8-4, but has won just six of its past 19, nine of 25 and 13 of 35. The Mariners are 24-7 when allowing three runs or fewer. They're batting .293 with 83 homers at home. Seattle leads the majors with 170 homers. The Mariners took two of three from the Orioles at the Kingdome earlier this season. Ponson and Moyer met in the opener, with Ponson taking the loss, having allowed 10 hits and nine runs (three earned) in four innings. The Mariners hit three homers off him. Moyer also gave up 10 hits, along with five runs. Brady Anderson and Cal Ripken reached him for homers. The Orioles won a 14-11 slugfest the next night, a game made closer when Mike Timlin surrendered five runs in the ninth and recorded just one out. Mussina took the loss in the third game, 4-2. He allowed four runs in 7 2/3 innings and was charged with his first error since Aug. 7, 1995. Pub Date: 7/30/99
