Liberty High grad helps teach future astronauts at camp

Michele Lawrence, a 1995 graduate of Liberty High School, is spending part of the summer in Huntsville, Ala., teaching high school students who are attending the U.S. Space Camp Program.

A student at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Fla., she is an honor student and will be inducted into the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society in the fall.

She is president of Zeta Chi Sorority and a member of the American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics and Students for Exploration and Development of Space.

Her space camp teaching is part of a cooperative program in which she helps with the astronaut training portion of the students' program.

Lawrence plans to graduate in December with a bachelor of science degree in space science.

She is the daughter of Doris and Michael Lawrence of Eldersburg.

Fires

Sykesville: Firefighters responded at 4: 49 a.m. yesterday to a trash fire in the 1300 block of Lee Lane. Units were out for 31 minutes.

Sykesville: Firefighters from Sykesville, Gamber and West Friendship in Howard County responded at 7: 53 p.m. yesterday to an appliance fire in the 600 block of Shimmering Run Court. Units were out for 23 minutes.
