County school officials urge registration before next month

TOWSON -- Baltimore County public school officials are encouraging parents to register their children for the 1999-2000 school year before Aug. 1.

Schools are open during the summer, but some parents might be unaware of that and delay registration, said spokeswoman Marjorie Hampson. Early registration allows school officials to evaluate students for class placement and to adjust teacher staffing.

Parents should contact their local school office to schedule an enrollment appointment or call 410- 887-4554.

Woman dies from injuries caused by collision with deer

ESSEX -- A Southwest Baltimore woman died yesterday of injuries she suffered when the motorcycle she was riding on struck a deer Thursday on Interstate 195 near Arbutus, said state police at the Golden Ring Barracks.

Kelly Thiels, 28, of the 2000 block of Breitwert Ave. in Morrell Park died about 2 p.m. at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she had been in critical condition, police said.

She was a passenger on a 1993 Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by Paul F. Cullens, 41, of the 5100 block of Leeds Ave. in Arbutus, police said. They were westbound on I-195, west of Interstate 95, about 8: 47 p.m. when the motorcycle struck a deer that had emerged from woods. Cullens died at the scene.

Volunteers sought to serve as mentors to youth at risk

TOWSON -- The Baltimore County Department of Social Services is seeking volunteers to mentor youth or young parents at risk. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least four hours a week for a year with a youngster or parents.

Bicycle registration set for Saturday in Hillendale

HILLENDALE -- County police and the 100 Halstead Men will sponsor a bicycle registration Saturday, police said yesterday.

It will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hillendale Police Athletic League center, 1111 Halstead Road. Parents should bring a driver's license or other proof of age and identity to register the bicycle.

Police find body of man with several gunshot wounds

Responding to a 911 call of a shooting, Southwestern District officers found the body of a man with several gunshot wounds about 12: 05 a.m. yesterday in the first block of S. Woodington Road.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Homer Pennington at 410- 396-2100.

Man found fatally shot in East Baltimore alley

Police said yesterday they had no suspect and had yet to determine a motive in the fatal shooting of a man Monday night in East Baltimore.

The body of Percy James Wright, 25, was found by officers about 8: 45 p.m. in an alley behind the 1100 block of Rutland Ave., said Sgt. Scott Rowe, a police spokesman. Wright of the 2000 block of Cecil Ave. had several gunshot wounds to the upper body and head.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call Detective Clifton Macer of the homicide squad at 410-396-2100.
