Local landscaping firm wins national safety awards

Aspen Grove Landscape of Millersville has been awarded two national safety awards -- the "No Lost Time Accidents" and "No Vehicle Accidents" awards -- in the Associated Landscape Contractors of America Safety Contest.

The contest is divided into categories according to the total number of hours worked during the contest period. The Fleet Contest recognizes firms with good vehicle safety records.

The Associated Landscape Contractors of America is a national trade association serving professional interior and exterior landscape contracting firms throughout the United States.

Web site designer to speak at meeting

The Annapolis Women's Network will hold a meeting featuring Amy Vansant Hines, designer of award-winning Web sites and owner of Vansant Creations of Annapolis, as their guest speaker.

The meeting will be held at 5: 30 p.m. July 28 at Toadnet, a Internet provider and Web page host in Severna Park. Cost is $5. Reservations are required by July 27.

DNR initiative offering water preservation grants

Maryland's Clean Marina Initiative, a program of the Department of Natural Resources, is offering grants to marinas, boat yards and yacht clubs for restoration and preservation in South River, Deep Creek Lake, the Upper Elk River, Mattawoman Creek and Isle of Wight Bay watersheds.

A total of $112,000 is available to cover 75 percent of the purchase and installation costs of these items:

A pressure washing system that filters and reuses wash water, which will not be available in the Mattawoman Creek watershed.

A fish-cleaning station equipped with garbage disposal and sanitary sewer connection.

A vacuum sander or grinder, which will not be available in the Mattawoman Creek watershed.

An oil and antifreeze recycling station.

A separator to filter oil out of contaminated bilge water.

A shoreline buffer planted with native plants.

One of the items will be funded in each watershed. Applications have been mailed to marinas in the five watersheds. The completed applications are due to DNR by Friday.

Chamber's power breakfast to include presentations

Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce will hold a power breakfast from 7: 30 a.m. to 9: 30 a.m. July 28 at Herrington on the Bay Restaurant, 7149 Lake Shore Drive in Friendship.

The breakfast will include presentations by three chamber members, as well as casual networking. The cost is $17 if paid by Friday, $22 at the door and $27 for nonmembers. Information: 410- 757-6709 or 410-268-7676.

Fund-raising group to hold breakfast, training meeting

The Maryland Chapter of the National Society of Fund-Raising Executives will hold a breakfast and training meeting from 7: 30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday at Country Inn and Suites by Carlson, 2600 Housley Road, Annapolis.
